Sumter County School Closures and Transfers
Sumter County Schools announced that it will close its only traditional public school, Sumter County High School, in December. The school’s student population has declined by about 45% in the past decade, making it unsustainable to operate. Students and staff will be transferred to surrounding schools.
Athletic Trainer Acts as Human Shield in School Gun Incident
An athletic trainer at Smiths Station High School in Lee County acted as a human shield to protect students when a teenager brought a gun into the school’s gym. Lee County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the school after receiving a report of the armed student. The student was taken into custody without incident, and no injuries were reported.
